When the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Forces from Okinawa landed on a beach at Danang in March 1965, their commander, realizing that the same shoreline had been home to French Expeditionary Forces a decade earlier, changed his unit's name to the 3rd Marine Amphibious Forces. This term, "amphibious," aptly summarized the American military experience in Vietnam where so many troops found themselves immersed in landscapes and spaces already long-defined by decades if not centuries of military struggle. Americans struggled to make sense of these spaces while Vietnamese on all sides competed to redefine them along new revolutionary and nationalist lines. American military acts of construction and destruction became embedded in deeper environmental and spatial histories of urban and rural life where military conflict was a near-constant. Drawing on the author's recently published book, this talk explores how this military conflict has reshaped landscapes and environments in modern Vietnam.
